Take It On! Organizing and Reorganizing The Nut House

Since we moved the kids into our addition over the summer, The Nut House has been in a constant state of organization and reorganization. It felt a lot like we were moving to another home. Everything in 1 bedroom got divided up into 3 new bedrooms, and many things from around the house got moved up to the 4 new bedrooms.

It has been a huge project that seems to never end. At first it was overwhelming, our home has been in a state of remodel for over 7 years, and new construction for over 2. There were many things that have been boxed up, and in storage for years. I am finding boxes, and bags of things that I don’t even remember packing up. The idea that if you put it away and don’t use it for 6 months, you should get rid of it is both true, and completely false in the case of random things boxed up, and stashed away. Many boxes I thought would only be packed for a few months, and then would be out again. It has been like Christmas morning opening up boxes of goodies that I have been looking for, for years. Many things came right out of storage, and tossed into the charity bags.

Wee Nut is 2 1/2 years old, and in the months after he was born, when I got overwhelmed, I just grabbed empty diaper boxes or any other random box, and tossed anything that was in my way into the box, and toss it in a closet. While it felt good to clear the clutter, and clean out the space around me, it got annoying that there were so many boxes taking up storage space, and there were things that should have be stored in closets that didn’t have anywhere to go.

I always knew that our addition would open up eventually, so I let it all go, and lived for the day when everything was done and I could get my life organized again. The past month especially has been a wonderful time of cleaning out closets, boxes piled up in the corner of my old office, and even our bedroom. I have come to realize that my bedroom is about twice as big as I though!

I am in the process of taking on the change of seasons clothes swap. It is so awesome to be able to have the boxes of clothes out, and not have them take up the living room while I do this. I have been trying to get this done for a few weeks, and actually thought that I could get it done in less than a week. We had a couple of warm days that were up in the 80’s, so I postponed packing up all of the warm weather clothes. Even this week it has been warm enough to have the windows open in the afternoons. I am done with that, I am pretty sure out warm weather is coming to an end, and all the summer clothes are getting packed up this week. Now that the addition is done, we have new attic space upstairs (I still can’t believe we have an upstairs!) and I can store all of the kids clothes up there instead of in the living room closet. You have no idea how happy this makes me!

I have been working on moving my things from my old office/studio space in to my new much bigger (yay!) office/studio space. I think it has been about a month, and I am ready to be done with this too! My office got hit the hardest after Owee was born, everything around the house got tossed in there and the door was closed. Now my new space is wide open with lots of large windows, and I am so excited to get back to my jewelry making. Now I am creating storage space, organizing this space, and getting it set up for me to use every day!

Tuesday is the real beginning of the week. Monday is a trial run for the week, and Tuesday is when things really start to get done. Tuesday is my day to organize my week and start to focus on what I am going to get done.

This week I am going to finish the change of seasons clothes swap. I hope that we don’t get any more warm weather after this because my kids are going to have to suffer in their long sleeves and pants. A Mama can only take boxes of clothes sitting out in the family room for so long before it all has to end.

I am also going to be tackling both my old office and new office, getting everything moved out and organized.

I am excited to take both of these things on and really see the difference in my home and move on to the next projects I need to do to get it organized.

What projects are you Taking on this week?

Mondays in our world mean six appointments and art class. Tuesday is almost always at home to do school. Today we had planned a science day but I was too sick so the girls just did regular school. Tomorrow we go into the city because I have to see the hematologist. We will run some errands while we are there if I am up to it. Thursday, both girls see the orthodontist and my oldest sees the neurologist in the city again. Any time we have to go into the city it eats up a whole day. Friday is co-op. Saturday I hope to feel good enough to rearrange the school area and living room plus we have to go to the laundromat. Sunday is church and on Monday the craziness starts all over again.

Wow Tricia, that is a crazy busy week! I know what you mean about appointments eating up the day. Our drive to peds cardiology is only about 1/2 hour, but it still eats up the whole day…and actually when you add in parking garage time, I need to leave an hour early. 2 weeks ago we had 2 days of appointments, last week we had 1 appointment and we have one more tomorrow and we should be set for another couple of months.

We have science scheduled on Saturdays so that we can include Mr Wall Nut in with the experiments as many of them will also count as Cub Scout achievements and he likes to get in on those. It is also nice to have him around to help out and he likes to get involved in the kids education, which is a bonus 😉

I hope you are feeling better today!
