We Are Home From the Hospital – For Good This Time

In case you are wondering, and missed the news last week, we are actually home! If feels so good,a bit lonely, and very quiet.

And Owain had a clinic appointment with peds cardiology yesterday, and there is no fluid building up since we have been home! *doing some serious amounts of cartwheels over here*

For the most part we are settling in. Owee still talks a bit of pain now and then, and has only slept through the night once since we have been home. He got used to sleeping sitting up to help drain the fluid from his chest, and now insists on sleeping sitting up, haha. Except that now that he is not in a hospital bed, he falls over a lot during the night.

There is not really much going on. The big 3 kids are still in New York with my parents and will be coming home this weekend! Now that it looks like Owain is home for good, and we can put his surgery and hospital stay behind us, I am really starting to miss them. But I know they are having a great time with Grammy & Grandpa Nut!

Honey Nut turned 2 last week, and she got her big brother and bestest friend home from the hospital the day before her birthday. Little Nut Nut turned 5 yesterday in New York, and for the first time in 10 years I was not with my child on their birthday. I did get to talk on the phone with him and his brothers, and they all had lots to say.

My veggie garden is hanging on for dear life and we most likely lost one of my hanging upside down tomato plants while we were in the hospital. It just didn’t get enough of the small amounts of rain water that kept the plants in the ground alive. We are getting enough squash, zucchini, and beans to harvest every day, and there are dozens of tomatoes of different varieties and sizes that are growing at a wicked fast pace.

That is about it. It is kind of strange to wander around with so little going on.

Hi, I don’t remember how I found your blog, but I’m a homeschool mama who checks up on your sweet family from time to time. I saw this on the news in NY today, and thought of you and Owain. I have a feeling this is being talked about because of you and moms like you! Awesome!

Thanks Kathleen! That is a great article 🙂 We are working on that in Va too.

Have you started homeschool lessons this year yet?

Lisa…Is your chapter of MLH the closest to Stafford or would it be Richmond? Can you email me or post on my blog, I am thinking it is time we join.

    Hey there!
I just got around to reading your latest blog posts…I’ve been keeping up with your facebook, but I always like reading the juicy details in your blog!

Soooo glad that Owain is home and his fluid is gone! He’s been in our prayers and Kaston often requests his status! Those chest tubes are crazy things I tell ya! When Kaston had his Fontan, he participated in a chest tube study for that very reason. Some kids drain small amounts, some kids go on for weeks…with no explanation at all! Maybe one of these days they’ll figure it out & have an ah ha moment – for the sake of our kids! Kaston was only in the hospital like 8 or 9 days post Fontan, so his fluid drainage was minimal.

Maybe now things can calm down (really what is calm these days, huh?!) and you guys can get back to normal chaos. I’ve been getting together homeschool stuff and am getting sooo excited! We have been doing a little review this summer just to bridge the grades. And of course, reading as much as I can force them! But they’re coming around and picking up books when I’m not looking – mission accomplished! Do you have any curriculum that you just absolutely love? We’re doing 3rd grade & 7th grade.

I’m doing an eclectic mix of stuff – no school in a box for this gal! We decided to start off with American History, of course, doing the reading, math, writing, etc. and Spanish for Korah – gonna get her 1st high school credit! For science, right now we’re doing marine biology and geology, a little bit of animal science and then this winter, we’ll do anatomy because we hunt!

We’re going to Oak Ridge, TN in September because Bob’s gonna be there for 3 weeks & all we have to pay for is airfare. They have TONS of museums because that’s where they created the atomic bomb! So we’ll do alot of WWII history too. I guess we’ll just sort of go out of order, but that’s ok! If you know of any great places in eastern TN to visit, I’m open for ideas!

I’m hoping that I’m getting them enough information. It seems like in public school, they learn about a whole lot of stuff, but just small parts of each area. I am really wanting to dig in deep with each thing we study. If there’s anything you can suggest that help you, I’m open to all ideas!

Hoping Owain continues to thrive at home with his family! Many blessings!
    Jamie
