Strange Critters Moving in to Your House?

There are plenty of crazy creepy things that end up in our houses. I have to say that most of them have given me chills, and I just might have nightmares from some of them. I’ve been thinking about a strange critter nest that my mother found in her car a last month.

My parents were gone visiting my brother for a few days, and during that time a critter moved in. What made it even weirder, was that they didn’t even find it for over a week after they got back. We were on the phone with my mother when she found the nest, and when she described it, all I could think of was a small mouse nest. She emailed me a few pictures of the nest she found, I couldn’t believe how big it was. It was HUGE and not a small little mouse nest either.

It pretty much takes up most of the area under the hood of the car. We think we know what it might be. Any one have any ideas what might live in this nest?

Oh Man, Looks like you have a rats nest. Literally. We had the same thing happen in a van that stays parked in our driveway. The darn critters got in there and ate through all the electrical wires, so we had to have it fixed to the tune of a gazillion dollars.

But the worst thing we found in our house was an oppossum skeleton. We were fixing some air conditioning ducts and tore open a wall in our laundry room. The man who was doing the demolition had to crawl into a tiny space to do this and came out screaming and white as a ghost. It was funny and disgusting at the same time.

Oh man Kim, that poor guy, lol!

Rodents can cost a pretty penny when they get into electrical in vehicles, that happened to me once years ago. They built a nest that stunk up my car for years! No matter what I did the car always smelled like mouse nest. I finally just had to get rid of it.

Well, that’s an interesting place for a nest!! No idea what it could be, but I could venture a guess and say “chipmunk” …what did you guys think it was?
I had a not so amusing find in my own house, happened to blog about it here:

I had a squirel get into my condo. It was in my laundry room. When I lived home as a kid, our cat brought in a live mouse and let it go. Go figure. I used to go to Mexico a lot and the Geckos were all over the place, inside and out, but they didn’t bother me. The ceilings were very high and generally they stayed up on the ceilings or high on the walls near the ceiling. Out east I got ants and crickets which was a battle.

We get the ants and crickets too! The crickets are soooo loud.

I have no clue what kind of nest this might be…some kind of rodent?

Anyways, Hi, I am Coleene and I am visiting from BlogFrog. Glad to meet you and your “Nutty” family! You visited me on Blogfrog, so I thought I’d check you out as well. I have a blog about a creature that also came to visit me. You can read about it at:

    • Hazel Nut | 17th Aug 10

I know! And can you imagine driving around and not knowing it was there?

  6. Kim | 13th Aug 10

Ok, that nest is going to give me nightmares for the next week now. It’s HUGE.

    I’m literally getting shivers. Yuck.

    • Hazel Nut | 13th Aug 10

I know! And she drove around like that and didn’t even know it was in there! I hope you are able to sleep.

It almost looks like a squirrel nest but it’s in the wrong place.

    • Hazel Nut | 12th Aug 10

Yeah, you would think a squirrel nest would be up in a tree, huh? LOL!

  8. Meg | 11th Aug 10

Oh my goodness!! I have no idea what would live in that sort of nest, but you are right, it’s huge!

    • Hazel Nut | 12th Aug 10

I know! I had a mouse nest in one of my cars once, and that is what I was picturing when my mother mentioned it. That thing is huge!

That nest is unbelievable! It’s funny you brought up this topic today, because just yesterday, I was sitting in my office at the desk when I looked to my left to see an enormous (I’m not kidding) 4 inch long grasshopper. It was one of those yellow, thick bodied ones. My elder daughter saw it and started screaming, but I just left him alone. I think he may have gotten in the house through the doggy door! But, my story doesn’t beat your mom’s “car nest.”

Wow, I just saw the biggest grasshopper I ever saw in my life today! It was several inches long, and kind of yellowish, I had no idea that they even got that big. It wasn’t 4 inches long, but it was still huge, lol. I also never saw a grasshopper that color before.

I have no idea what kind of nest it could be but I would love to know what you think it is. Are you going to give a hint? 🙂 I’ve had strange critters in my house: three different species of crickets, water bugs, geckos crawling in my ceiling fixtures, an unseen thing living in my walls scratching and clawing at the walls, it finally tunneled into my cabinet under the sink. I saw the hole it made…very large…but never saw what it was. My husband boarded up the hole soon after that.

    • Hazel Nut | 11th Aug 10

Sherri, we had crickets in our house before, they are sooo loud! No water bugs or geckos, but when it rains a lot we get earwigs, gag!

I will say that what we are fairly certain this critter is, doesn’t usually like to come into the house, but will occasionally get into attics if given the chance.
