Reasons Why I Homeschool: Our Founding Fathers

I can’t think of anything I would rather do than spend my days with my children. The fact that I get to teach them is awesome! Every day I learn something new. I learn things that I forgot, and I get to teach things to my kids that I loved learning about when I was a kid.

We have the best time with history. At my kids young age, most of the history that we learn is US history. There is some world history that we learn about, mostly how it pertains to the founding of our country. Since we live in Virginia, many of the things that are local to us have to do with our founding fathers, the American Revolution, and the first steps of our Country. Virginia has been the birthplace to 8 presidents, and we are close to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, James Madison’s Montpelier, James Monroe’s Ash Lawn-Highland, George Washington’s Mount Vernon, and Woodrow Wilson’s birthplace. All of which are very cool! We haven’t been to all of them…yet, but we plan on it!

My kids are always amazed when we are doing our lessons, and something or someone of historic significance is part of our lessons. It is so much fun that we can learn about Thomas Jefferson and go visit Monticello. One of Thomas Jefferson’s visions became the University of Virginia. When I think of Thomas Jefferson, and everything he did as a president, I am amazed. But when I think of what Thomas Jefferson did as the founder of the University of Virginia, and the reason for the UVa Medical Center and Children’s hospital, I think of him as playing a roll in saving my Owain’s life.

I love teaching my children about how if we look back in history, we can see how it directly relates to our everyday life. They get so excited to learn about our founding fathers, and how they made our country what it is today. They still don’t quite get the idea of time, and the difference between 10 years, 100 years, or 200 years, but they are having a great time learning about how our country was formed, and what our founding fathers did to give us the life we have today.
