Why I Prepare, Print & e-File for Free with TurboTax!

The last time we paid to have our taxes done, the guy charged us $160 and refused to give us the child tax credit or earned income credit, something like that. He said we didn’t need it or qualify for it or some such nonsense. I knew he was wrong, but also had a feeling of not trusting myself, like I was not the one with the fancy degree in what ever it was that allowed this guy to have the enormous house, with his home office that we were sitting in while staring at the Blue Ridge Mountains. I was intimidated by his wealth.

After we filed we got a letter from the IRS stating that we qualified for what ever it was that we didn’t file for and did we want the money. Heck yeah we wanted the money! And it was a good chunk at that.

I have never paid anyone to do my taxes since then. That was the one and only time, and it was a bad choice. Since then I have been using TurboTax, and I love it! I use Quicken throughout the year for our budgeting and banking and many things automatically load into TurboTax.

TurboTax is so easy to use, and every year it will transfer all the information from previous returns into the current return. There are error checks for both Federal and State taxes. If you need an extension, you can file for one online through TurboTax.

There are years that I have done really well with recording itemized deductions. Gotten receipts for every monetary donation, and every article of clothing donated,  as well as any pieces of jewelry donated for events. I love doing my taxes myself because I can go through deductions on TuboTax and enter these items when I have the time. I don’t have to worry about getting everything, taking it to someone and going through everything all at once…or getting home and finding another folder of deductions. When I don’t have itemized deductions, TurboTax has information about the standard deduction and enters it in for me.

Doing my own taxes also gives me the chance to go back over my budget for the last year, look at our expenses, how they compare to previous years, and what we can do differently this year. And any time I need to go get a copy of my taxes for reason throughout the year, I can print out the files I have saved on my computer.

My favorite thing about TurboTax? It keeps me from hauling all 5 kids off to take over some tax prep office to talk with some guy about numbers while my kids ask me 271 times when it is time to leave. Win!
